Indian stock market today

The Sensex, the biggest moves on the BSE, the rupee, gold and crude, updating while the page is open. Below the prices: what each one tells you, when the market is open, and every exchange holiday left this year.

Sensex: today, this month, this year

The Sensex is the BSE’s index of 30 large companies. Switch the tabs to see how far today’s move goes against the past month and year: a 1% fall reads very differently after a 10% run-up.

Which sectors moved: the Sensex heatmap

Each box is a Sensex company, sized by its market value and coloured by today’s change: green up, red down. When a whole sector block turns one colour, the move is about the sector (a bank result, an oil price swing), not one company.

Top gainers, losers and most active on the BSE

Big percentage moves often come from small companies, so check the “most active” tab too: that is where the money is actually trading.

Rupee, gold and crude

Three prices that reach household budgets: the dollar-rupee rate (imports, foreign travel and fees), gold, and crude oil, which feeds into petrol and diesel prices.

Why this gold price is lower than your jeweller’s. “Spot gold” is the international price converted into rupees. The Indian rate you see quoted for 24-carat gold adds import duty, 3% GST and a local premium on top, so it is noticeably higher; jewellery adds making charges as well. The GoldBeES line is a gold ETF traded on the BSE, so it moves with the Indian price. One unit is a fraction of a gram, not a gram.

Questions about this page

What time does the Indian stock market open and close?
Normal trading on the NSE and BSE runs from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm IST, Monday to Friday, except exchange holidays. A pre-open session runs from 9:00 am to 9:15 am, in which orders are collected and the opening price is set.
Why does this page show BSE prices and not NSE?
NSE does not allow its prices to be shown in the free TradingView widgets used on this page, while BSE does. Large companies trade on both exchanges, and their prices on the two are usually within a few paise of each other.
What is the difference between the Sensex and the Nifty?
The Sensex tracks 30 large companies listed on the BSE. The Nifty 50 tracks 50 large companies listed on the NSE. Both are weighted by free-float market capitalisation and usually move in the same direction on a given day.
Are the prices on this page live?
They update automatically while the page is open, using data from TradingView. Depending on the exchange and TradingView’s data licence, quotes can be delayed by several minutes. Check with your broker before placing a trade.
